- Why stop with autographed merchandise
- At this time trading cards were really hot and any licensed product would sell
- So we decided to help the company secure a Peanuts Trading Card license (the first one ever issued). Our competition was the mighty Topps. It didn’t look good but in the end we won the contract and beat out Topps.
From selling autographed merchandise to Peanuts trading cards it all seemed so natural and easy. We helped with getting the cards produced for the magazine and were paid a middleman fee for the work. When the cards were released they were an instant success and sold almost $1,000,000 worth at wholesale in a few short months. Total profits on the deal were over $500,000 which was not bad for a few months work. Shortly after that the magazine was acquired by a large public company who managed to destroy, very quickly, what we had built. They abandoned all of what we had put in place to focus solely on the magazine. Looking back that was a huge mistake because within in a few short years they were in trouble and forced to sell to another company who still publishes the magazine to this day.
